Introduction. Modern challenges of the information war require that graduates of higher education acquire competencies that allow them to form their own ideological position and develop the ability to resist enemy propaganda. The most important element of the information war has become the falsification of history. The article presents the results of a number of studies conducted in groups of cadets and students of educational organizations in order to identify the most pressing theoretical and methodological problems of teaching Russian history in law schools. The studies analyzed the problems of the first year of teaching Russian history and searched for solutions. Methods. In the course of the studies, general scientific (analysis, synthesis, generalization of experience, etc.) and specific scientific (observation, survey, testing, historical-genetic, etc.) methods were used. Results. The article discusses the reasons that led to a critically low level of historical education. The head of state even had to directly intervene in the situation. The President demanded that the scientific and pedagogical community change its attitude towards teaching historical disciplines. An analysis of the criteria defined by the state and the expert community for teaching historical disciplines in the higher education system is carried out. The author presents his experience gained during the first year of teaching the academic discipline «History of Russia» at the Ministry of Internal Affairs University. Options for solving the most pressing problems identified during this period are proposed
